Public Relations Manager, Cuyahoga Community College

SUMMARY

The Public Relations Manager plays an integral role in executing the College’s storytelling and reputation management strategies. This role is chiefly responsible for writing and producing a variety of content for traditional and new media. The Public Relations Manager works closely with the College-Wide Director, Strategic Communications and VP Integrated Communications to ensure frequent and positive coverage about the College in local and national media. The Public Relations Manager cultivates proactive relationships with members of the news media, develops a media relations strategy; prepares press releases and pitches stories about College news and events; and fields inquiries from members of the news media. This position collaborates with the Integrated Communications team and departments across the College to develop and execute messaging, content and public relations initiatives to showcase the College and connect with internal and external stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Cultivates intentional and positive partnerships with reporters, editors and producers for local and national media; maintains an extensive media list
Identifies and develops positive storylines to promote and support the strategic priorities of the department and College, in collaboration with others in the department and across the College
Manages a list of faculty and staff members who can speak as experts for local and national news stories and trends
Works closely with faculty, staff, students and alumni to proactively elicit story ideas and prepare them for media opportunities
In collaboration with the College-Wide Director, Strategic Communications and VP Integrated Communications, prepares and distributes press releases and pitches stories to the full range of media outlets including local, regional and national print, interactive, radio and TV
Responds to media inquiries in collaboration with the College spokesperson
Remains current on media trends in Northeast Ohio and nationally and provides training within the department and across the
College on the nature and implications of these trends as well as basic media relations skills/guidelines
Participates in the development of media relations strategy and tactics
Advises department and College leadership on potential crisis communications situations and assists in the development of response plans
In the absence of the VP Integrated Communications, serves as College spokesperson
Oversees production and content development of the triannual College magazine, which may include managing freelance writers and photographers
Maintains an editorial calendar and ensures editorial quality
Writes articles, profiles, news releases, social posts and other content for both internal and external audiences
Collaborates with the internal communications manager to ensure that internal and external messages align.
Develops and manages the Newsroom and other webpages in coordination with Integrated Communications
Tracks, analyzes and prepares reports on media coverage about the College
Develops, repurposes and reimagines content for a variety of digital and new media platforms and works closely with the social media manager for optimal performance placement
Performs other related duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE/TRAINING

Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations/Communications or related field
Significant related experience may substitute for education
Minimum of six years of experience in Public/Media Relations
Demonstrated experience in working in a content management system (CMS)
Demonstrated experience effectively making decisions that have significant, broad implications on the management and operations of a division (or equivalent business area)
Demonstrated experience requiring diverse problem solving methods in a variety of situations
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

Possess working knowledge of Public Relations concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use varied situations as it pertains to the departmental focus
Possess working knowledge of digital/social media marketing and communication strategies
Possess working knowledge of AP Style Guide
Accuracy and attention to detail, excellent proofreading and editing skills; strong editor
Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Intermediate-level project management skills
Ability to work independently with limited supervision
Ability to collaborate, persuade and gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas on significant projects
Ability to prioritize/handle multiple tasks and work with deadlines in a dynamic environment
Ability to collaborate, negotiate and resolve conflicts on major projects
